More from San Francisco Giants

After a strong offseason, the San Francisco Giants are poised at a 2016 run to the playoffs, and are weeks away from reporting to their Spring Training facilities in Arizona. And this year, Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner will be rocking a new style.

As football winds down, the restlessness of the baseball offseason looks to be finally coming to an end. As thrilling as every sport is, there’s just something special about the day when pitchers and catchers finally report. For the Giants, that will be February 17th, among the first wave of teams to report to their respective Spring Training sites.

The Giants have headed to the deserts of Arizona since 1947, back when they were known as the New York Giants and the likes of Willie Mays roamed the outfield. The Giants have played in Scottsdale since 1982, with the current Scottsdale Stadium having been built in 1992.

Scottsdale also previously hosted the PCL’s Phoenix Firebirds before they moved to Fresno and became the Grizzlies. Of the 15 Cactus League teams, the Giants are one of only five who don’t share a stadium in Arizona. Scottsdale Stadium is only used by the Giants come February, and as such it is always decked out in black and orange.

This year, the Giants will be joining the rest of the league in wearing Majestic Athletic’s new ‘Flex Base’ technology for their uniforms. This new technology is purported to be up to 20% lighter, which was a player-requested feature. There will also be special Arizona and Florida-themed patterns on the uniform numbers. Other than that, there’s the obvious difference in the Giants own uniform design.

For years, the Giants have worn their standard black batting practice uniforms as their Spring Training uniforms, but that appears to have come to an end. This week, they unveiled new Spring Training specific uniforms, which use the new lightweight material Majestic conjured up for the league this year.

The old uniforms featured the Giants wordmark in orange, but now the wordmark has been replaced with the standard interlocking SF logo as seen on the caps. In many ways, this jersey is a black and orange version of the current Sunday road game alternate.

The back of the uniform includes the last name of each player and their number in the usual orange fashion. The letters and numbers also have the Arizona Spring Training logos and cactus art sublimated over them, and the left sleeve features the new Arizona ‘AZ’ logo.

As for the caps, they are a switch-up from the previously black with orange-brim ones they have traditionally worn.

Seen above, the new caps are nothing too crazy. The new ones are the same mesh, Diamond-Fit technology equipped caps from New Era, but with black brims like the standard game caps. The more obvious difference is the Arizona patch on the side. There is also a very sublimated National League logo embossed on the back side.

The Giants are definitely one of the more moderately redesigned teams, which is likely a good thing. There was some pretty funky new gear unveiled and a lot of traditions were thrown to the wind. For a complete rundown of changes, consult this handy guide.

Once pitchers and catchers report on February 17th, the countdown will be on with the first game set for March 2nd. With lots of young roster invites, Spring Training should be interesting this year.
