Matt McGloin

We all know the value of quarterbacks in the league. Without a solid signal caller, your offense is going nowhere. That’s equally true of back up quarterbacks. You need a good one if your number one goes down with an injury. Luckily for the Raiders, they have a number one who looks like he could be one of the better quarterbacks in the league, and at the moment, they also have a solid number two behind him – McGloin.

Though there are some quarterback-needy teams out there – the Cleveland Browns come to mind – who might try to take a run at signing McGloin, the Raiders should do everything they can to keep him. He worked well in OC Bill Musgrave‘s system in the 2015 preseason, and he is a solid back up option to have on the roster in case something ever happened to Carr.

No, he’s not flashy. He’s not spectacular. He’s likely never going to be one of the NFL’s elite signal callers. But he is a competitor, he’s smart, and he can be an effective game manager. He’s quite a bit like Alex Smith of the Chiefs in that regard – nothing flashy, but put the right pieces around him and he can get the job done.

He’s also a restricted free agent which means the Raiders will have the right to match any offer he receives. While they should avoid an all out bidding war for his services if it came to that, McKenzie and the Raiders should make an effort to keep him on the roster as Carr’s understudy.
