Cal Bears By The Numbers in the NFL Draft
31 and 17
Of the 32 current franchises in the NFL, 31 have drafted Cal players. The lone exception is the Houston Texans, the newest NFL franchise after starting play in 2002. Since the Texans took Fresno State quarterback David Carr first overall in 2002, the team has taken 120 players through the draft from 76 different schools, but has never picked a Bear.

17 represents the number of Cal players the San Francisco 49ers have drafted, the highest total among NFL teams. In 1950, the 49ers took Cal quarterback Bob Celeri in the 10th round, 127th overall pick, which was the beginning of a long relationship between the two Bay Area teams. The 49ers picked Cal guard Forest Klein in the 19th round that year, as well. San Francisco also picked multiple Golden Bears in 1951, 1952, and 1955. In 2001, the 49ers picked Cal defensive end Andre Carter with the seventh overall pick, making him the only Cal first rounder taken by San Francisco, as well as their most recent Cal pick.
Behind San Francisco, the Washington Redskins have picked 16 Cal players (including the first Bear ever taken in the draft), the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears have taken 15, and the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals have both taken 13. As a franchise, the Cardinals have picked Cal players while playing in four different locations. They have been known as the Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals, Phoenix Cardinals, and Arizona Cardinals, and have picked Bears from each location.
