Establish a Physical Run Game

Oakland’s running game has been on again and off again all season long. Featured back Latavius Murray has absolutely dazzled in some games and has absolutely disappeared in others. Despite the fact that Murray has been dormant in some games – thanks in some small part to some questionable play calling by OC Bill Musgrave – Murray is on pace to crack 1,000 yards this season and still has the sixth best yardage total in the NFL with 878 yards.

  • The Packers come into the game with the league’s twenty-third ranked run defense, giving up about 116 yards per game. The Raiders will need to come out and establish a physical presence on the ground. They need to get Murray going early and keep feeding him. They will need to use Murray’s speed to get to the edge and his power to turn the corner once he gets there.

With center Rodney Hudson still questionable to play – and not yet one hundred percent – they will be far better off attacking the edges and staying away from the middle of the line. Tony Bergstrom has filled in admirably when needed, but he’s nowhere near the run blocker that Hudson is.

Establishing a solid ground game will help Oakland dictate the pace of the game, control the clock, and it will open up the passing game. They can’t afford to be a one dimensional offense and need to get the run game working for them.
