San Francisco 49ers Must Figure Out Their Offense Quickly
By David Ochoa
This Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers go up against the red hot Green Bay Packers. The Packers are currently undefeated, mostly thanks to the great play from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On the other hand, the 49ers have been dismal on both sides of the ball, and have lost their last two games by a combined score of 90-25. In order to even have a chance against Green Bay, the 49ers’ offense must come up big.

Now obviously, the defense must also have a good game if they have any hope of beating the Packers. However, no matter how well the defense plays, Rodgers and Green Bay are going to score points. How many points he scores all depends on how well the defense plays and how long the San Francisco offense holds onto the ball. They have got onto hold the ball, win the time of possession game, and keep the Packers’ offense off the field.
Colin Kaepernick had a terrible game that included four interceptions last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. While we can point fingers, judge, and accuse Kaepernick of regressing and claim he’ll never improve, after two and a half years in the league we can confidently say that last week’s performance is out of the ordinary.
Kaepernick usually protects the ball very well — outside of games against the Seattle Seahawks.
If Kaepernick has even a quarter of the turnovers he had against Arizona, the 49ers will be in trouble. San Francisco must take care of the football and keep it out of Rodgers’ hands. The longer he is standing on the sideline with a baseball cap on, the better it is for San Francisco as a whole.
However, holding on to the ball for the majority of the game is not going to matter if the 49ers can’t score. The defense isn’t going to be pitching a shutout, so the only way to beat the Packers is to outscore them.

Sine 2012, the 49ers are 4-0 against the Packers. Even with the great defenses the 49ers have had over the years, the offense still needed to put up at least 23 points in each game to come out with a win. This year, the 49ers have only hit 20 points once and that was week one and it was exactly 20 points. This year, the Packers have scored at least 27 points in each game.
Kaepernick seems to play his best games against Green Bay, but with the way the entire offense looks so far this season, it’s possibly going to take more magic than he has the ability to conjure to come out with a win.
On the other side of the coin though, this is exactly the kind of game that Kaepernick tends to win at. When everyone is turning against him, and more than half the fan base is calling for his benching, Kaepernick seemingly plays his best. It’s what makes him so frustratingly polarizing.
Kaepernick can lay an egg like he did last week and then come out and have a game that makes everyone think that maybe, just maybe he can take the next step into being an elite quarterback. If the 49ers somehow do win this game, the world will jump back on the Kaepernick bandwagon and point to this game as his potential ceiling — just like they have every other time he’s had a good game against the Packers.
The 49ers need to find a way to get the ball down the field, and they need to figure it out now. Teams are zeroing in on Carlos Hyde and forcing the 49ers to beat them through the air.
They have the personnel for it, they have tremendous athletes on their roster. Now, they just need to execute.
