The Giants will get a couple veterans back from their stints on the disabled list, as roster expansion allows them to activate them without needing to make other moves. Angel Pagan, who was dealing with knee tendinitis, and Tim Hudson, who was dealing with a lot of cranky parts (otherwise known as old man-itis) were both activated.

Pagan’s activation gives the Giants’ outfield a little more flexibility. As a switch-hitter, his bat off the bench is a welcome addition, if he is in fact healthy now. He got off to a fast start for the 2015 season, as he batted .336 over his first 33 games, but as his body began to deteriorate, beginning with two bad knees, his production fell off a cliff. In his last 69 games, he hit just .220, and had no power production, as his sore lower body took that away. If Pagan can get back to somewhere near his early production, that would greatly help the Giants.

Hudson, now 40 years old, will likely be used as a long reliever, but is being prepped to make at least one start. In his 475 career games, only one has come as a relief appearance. 2015, more than likely Hudson’s last season, has been rough, as he has a 4.80 and 1.411 WHIP in 17 starts.

Hudson made one rehab appearance with San Jose, a start that he treated as a relief appearance. In 2.2 innings, he allowed one hit and struck out two. That game is more notable because it featured Chase Johnson‘s 14 strikeout relief appearance.
