Another Deal in August

In the middle of their game on Monday night, the Giants were able to acquire outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the Boston Red Sox. In celebration, they played 14 innings to show their new teammate what he can expect out of the Giants’ torture.

In exchange for the outfielder, the Giants sent young left-handed pitcher Luis Ysla to Boston. Ysla has a great arm, but has been wildly inconsistent for the Giants’ farm system so far (he was profiled last offseason on GGS). To make room on the 40-man roster, Ryan Lollis was designated for assignment.

With this trade to San Francisco, De Aza has now been traded three times in about a year, and for the second straight August. Last year, he went from the Chicago White Sox to the Baltimore Orioles late in August, and was big for the Birds down the stretch. In 20 games in September for Baltimore, De Aza batted .293 with a .537 slugging percentage, collecting 11 extra-base hits and 10 RBI. In the postseason, he hit .333 in six games with three doubles, three RBI, and four runs scored.

With De Aza, the Giants get a much-needed left-handed bench bat, as well as someone who can play all three outfield positions in a pinch. San Francisco is hoping he can channel his Orioles’ Magic, and the Giants can get a mini-Marlon Byrd out of this deal.
