The talk surrounding the Phillies has been when Cole Hamels will get traded. The ace pitcher isn’t getting any younger and with the Phillies years away from contention, it is better for the Phillies to get prospects rather than hold on to Hamels. But while Hamels is the big name pitcher, lesser coveted Harang may actually be the best fit for the Giants.
Harang has been somewhat of a journeyman, playing for five different franchises the past five years. He has had somewhat of a career resurgence the past years, resulting in him actually having some trade value.
In 2014, Harang pitched to an even 12-12 with a 3.57 ERA and 161 strikeouts over 204.1 innings pitched. Those aren’t numbers that jump off the page, but they’re feasible for a pitcher of Harang’s quality.
He has started even better in 2015, pitching to a 4-5 record with a 2.02 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 71.1 innings pitched. Harang’s 2.02 ERA ranks fifth in the NL.
Harang’s numbers aren’t going to blow anyone out of the water, but he is the kind of player who can come in and get the job done. Harang would provide the Giants with a reliable option in the middle of their rotation.
Reliability is key while going for a long playoff run. There is no room for error. With how inconsistent the Giants rotation has been, Harang can come in and at least give the Giants a sense that they will be able to get a quality start that day.
The best part for the Giants is that Harang would not cost that much in terms of prospects. While Harang has had a resurgence, he is not a very sought-after player. Because of that, the Giants will be able to offer second or third-tier prospects in turn for Harang’s services.
Harang is no Hamels, but he could come in and be of utmost value for the Giants in their quest for another World Series.
