Leon Orr – Defensive End

McKenzie and Del Rio were quick to pounce on Orr once the draft ended. And probably with good reason. At 6’5”, 305 lbs., Orr is a massive presence, and can challenge the larger tackles on the outside. The question becomes, does he have the speed and technique to get around them and get to the quarterback?

Over his time at Florida, Orr collected just sixty two tackles, four and a half sacks, and thirteen tackles for a loss. Not exactly numbers that make you look twice. But he’s a player that has some upside, and also some connections on the team – wide receiver Andre Debose, selected in the seventh round, was a teammate of Orr’s for a time.

And of course, there is the problem with Orr walking out on his team at Florida to contend with. Orr says that he’s learned from the experience and regrets putting himself ahead of his team. He says it is a decision that will haunt him forever. Given the fact that McKenzie and Del Rio are both team first advocates, and do not tolerate selfishness or divas, it’s somewhat surprising that Orr was signed to begin with.

But people do make mistakes, and Orr has owned up to his. He’s a big body, has some natural athletic ability, and if developed, could be a solid rotational player who can help the Raiders get pressure on opposing QB’s.

He’s a long shot to make the roster, but if he truly has learned from his mistakes, and works his tail off, it’s not an impossibility that we’ll see him in Silver and Black this fall.

Next: Robertson Daniel?
