Week 8: New York Jets (2014 Record: 4-12)

It seems that every season, we hear that Geno Smith is a new man, a new quarterback, and is ready to lead the team. We’re still hearing that, but the Jets are also wisely making contingency plans.

Last season’s game against the Jets was horrible. The Oakland offense was out of synch, and the defense was run over, around, and through. Despite all that, it was still a close game into the fourth quarter when a long, backbreaking run by Chris Ivory sealed the deal and sent the Jets to a 19-14 victory.

  • In all, Oakland gave up 212 yards on the ground, and even made Smith look like a competent QB as he went 23-28 for 221 yards and a score. In his first professional start, Carr looked like a rookie and had a relatively pedestrian day, going 20-32 for 151 yards, and two scores.

Needless to say, it was an ugly game.

Now the Raiders get them on their home turf, and the Jets will not be able to run through the Oakland defense like they did last season. Not with all of the strengthening and improvement up the middle of the field. Carr has a season under his belt, and will be better for it, and the Raiders offense will look far different than the one New York faced last season.

As poorly as Oakland played last season, they were still in it until the end. They’re much better this season, and though the Jets have improved their roster, they still lack a playmaking QB they can rely on. Oakland will want to stay away from Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie in the secondary, so expect a heavy does of the run game.

The Jets simply don’t have enough pieces in place yet to be competitive. Oakland does and will be.

    Prediction: WIN
