Trent Richardson

When it was announced that the Raiders had signed Trent Richardson, you could hear the belly laughter resounding from all corners of the league. After all, the former Alabama product showed some promise, but couldn’t put together anything close to a decent season in either Cleveland or Indianapolis.

The Raiders did what they’ve always done – they pulled a player who has some upside and potential off the scrap heap in an effort to rehabilitate them. It’s a strategy that’s worked well for the organization in the past, and some of the greatest Raiders of all time have been reclamation projects.

  • Needless to say, if Richardson can’t make it work in Oakland, he’s not likely to garner much – if any – interest anywhere outside of Canada. This is pretty much the end of the line for him, and another bad, non-productive season for Richardson could potentially spell the end of his career.

The good news for Raider fans though, is that if Del Rio didn’t believe he could help turn Richardson’s career around, he wouldn’t have signed him. IT should also hearten Raider fans to hear Richardson saying that he already feels comfortable in Del Rio/OC Bill Musgrave‘s system as he’s familiar with some of its elements from his days with the Crimson Tide – the last team with which he had any success.

It’s hard to say how it will all pan out at this point, but if Richardson hopes to continue his career in the NFL, he’s going to need to show that he’s capable of doing so.
