Much like a fourth outfielder, a relief pitcher is not usually considered one of a team’s “x-factors.” While having a strong bullpen is key, as evidenced by the Royals bullpen and team success, it is usually an afterthought in terms of team’s “make-or-break” potential.

But with the starting rotation already facing some injuries, leading to a Chris Heston start in the third game of the season, the bullpen will be key in winning games for the Giants.

San Francisco’s bullpen was fantastic in 2014, finishing fifth in the MLB with a 3.01 ERA. The Giants bullpen came up clutch in the postseason, finishing second among all postseason teams with a 2.11 ERA. One big takeaway would be that the Giants’ bullpen pitched a massive 64 innings, most among qualified teams.

During the regular season, the team pitched 472 innings — a number we very well may see jump due to injuries suffered by the starting rotation.

Which is why Romo is so important. While he has lost the closing role to the newly dominant Santiago Casilla, Romo still plays a huge role as the bridge and eighth inning setup man for the Giants.

After being an All-Star in 2013, Romo fell off a little bit in 2014, posting an ERA of 3.72. But he was re-signed to a two year deal by the Giants this offseason.

Romo is important because he has the ability to become a dynamic setup man in the Giants bullpen. From 2010-2013, he held a sub-three ERA. If Romo can return to his old form, he can become a fantastic setup man to help get the Giants to lights out closer Casilla.

The Giants need for bullpen help, coupled with Romo’s proven ability make him an “x-factor” this season.
