8. Barry Bonds Hits His 71st Home Run of 2001

Bonds could have his own “greatest moments” list, as during the 2000’s, Pacific Bell Park was his kingdom. On this night, Bonds broke a record that still stands today, and no Major Leaguers since have come close to.

On a cold, early October night, Bonds sent a Chan Ho Park pitch deep into the right-field arcade, eclipsing Mark McGwire‘s former record of 70 home runs in a single season. The right-center field dimensions in AT&T Park are well over 400 feet, even eclipsing 421 feet in what the locals call “Triples Alley.” Bonds had no problem hitting baseballs that deep, making the ballpark look like a Little League field.

In the innings that followed, fans rushed to the dugout store to buy shirts and hats to commemorate Bonds’ 71st home run of the 2001 season, when they missed out on seeing Bonds hit another home run that night. Two days later, his season ended with another blast with his total at 73 home runs.

The only reason why this moment does not rank higher is due to the fact that later that night, the Dodgers eliminated the Giants from the postseason.

P.S. How awesome were those black Giants jerseys?
