6. Barry Bonds Ties Willie Mays with 660 Home Runs

It was the 2004 home opener at the newly named SBC Park. It was a perfect day for baseball, and Bonds made sure to leave his mark on the afternoon and Giants history, tying Mays for third place on the all-time home run list with a rocket into the awaiting kayaks in McCovey Cove.

Mays was there to greet him with a rose and a hug, as the two greatest hitters to ever wear a Giants uniform (or any uniform for that matter) shared a moment behind home plate. For Bonds to pass Mays meant that Bonds had now climbed the highest mountain as the Giants’ greatest slugger.

Later in the 2004 season, Bonds would become the third member of the 700 home run club with an opposite-field blast off of San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy, but everything from Duane Kuiper‘s call, to Bond’s embrace of his godfather, and to the craziness that took place in McCovey Cove to get the home run ball makes his moment a little more memorable.
