Bucky Brooks & Brian Baldinger pick G Brandon Scherff from Iowa

Here’s what NFL.com’s Brooks had to say about Scherff:

"“The departure of Mike Iupati could prompt GM Trent Baalke to turn to the Iowa standout as a possible replacement. Scherff is a rugged blocker at the point of attack with the nasty disposition to help the 49ers get back to a physical brand of football on offense.”"

And here’s what NFL.com’s Baldinger had to say about the Iowa standout:

"“The 49ers lost Mike Iupati to Arizona, but can replace him with a plug-and-play.”"

If the 49ers were to select the 6-foot-5, 315-pounder, he would seem to be the heir apparent to Iupati, who now makes his home in Arizona. They could hope to do what the Dallas Cowboys did in 2014 by selecting guard Zack Martin, who turned into one of the best guards in football in his rookie year. Scherff seems to have all the tools to do the exact same thing.

Much like Martin, Scherff played offensive tackle throughout college, and will likely transition to guard in the pros.

Scherff is a mauler in the run game, and will help solidify an offensive line that struggled, mostly due to injuries and inconsistency in 2014. He is also athletic and quick on his feet, which makes him a solid pass-blocker as well. If the 49ers were to pick Scherff, his pass-blocking would be an upgrade over Iupati, and his run-blocking could develop to the same level.
