Curry pays his mother — Sonya Curry — $100 for every turnover over three per game. Perhaps that is the reason his turnovers have decreased by over one half per game this season. Then again, perhaps it has something to do with the coaching change and Curry being put in better positions to benefit the team.
Either way, there is room for improvement here. Three turnovers per game is a lot, but it is not as bad as it seems when you consider how much the Warriors use Curry (9th-highest usage percentage in the league) and how often he sees double and even triple teams as soon as he crosses half court.
Curry sometimes dribbles into trouble a bit too often, but it is not anything he cannot fix. In certain cases, he needs to get rid of the ball quicker and find an open teammate instead of dribbling around, drawing multiple defenders making it difficult to exploit the bad position the defense is in.
However, Curry’s offensive numbers suggest his turnovers are not much of a problem. As explained above, his overall offensive game is still near the best in the league. He is third in the NBA in offensive win shares and trails only DeAndre Jordan, Kyle Korver, and Amir Johnson in effective field goal percentage (58%).
A high ranking does not mean there is no room for improvement, though. He needs to develop another wrinkle in evasiveness to be able to escape the swarming defensive players with less difficulty and make them pay. Of course, this is not to say he currently struggles at this; rather, it is a rare part of Curry’s game in which there is even the slightest room for improvement.
Overall, there is not much room for Curry to improve. This is not a knock against Curry or any part of his game, but rather a result of the superiority of his current game. Think about it: Curry is challenging the aforementioned James and other superstars for the title of best player in the world. There is so shame if this is as good as he gets.
