It’s hard to tell right now. The Giants are certainly still in the conversation to sign James Shields, but as Sabean has said, they have somewhat limited financial flexibility right now.

Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News said that Sabean will have to discuss the short-term and long-term goals and finances with Larry Baer in order to determine the Giants’ ability to sign another starting pitcher to a lengthy contract. Pavlovic also noted how the Giants already have almost $70 million committed to five starters.

The Giants have already re-signed Jake Peavy, but I believe this will only prove to be a good deal if they sign another starter like Shields.

Giants need more consistency in the starting rotation, given Tim Lincecum‘s struggles, Matt Cain‘s injuries last season, and Tim Hudson‘s age. However, should they give Shields a hefty contract and leave little to no money to spend on left field? That’s the question.
