San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Live Game Thread
The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Levi’s Stadium today at 1:25 pm PT. The game can be seen on CBS.
It seems like a long time ago that head coach Jim Harbaugh chose to start Colin Kaepernick over former 49er and current Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. This was a controversial decision that not all fans agreed with at the time, and this decision is still talked about today as the 49ers take on the Chiefs for the first time in the regular season since Smith was traded to the Chiefs.
You can read our thoughts on the Kaepernick-Smith debate here.
Although there was controversy at the time of the trade, Smith claims he has no bitterness towards the 49ers. Tyler Emerick of 49ers.com with the report:
"“No bitterness at all,” the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback said Wednesday on a conference call. “It’s so far removed, I feel like a lot has happened since then… Worrying about anything that’s outside of your control and dwelling on that is only going to have a negative impact.”"
Kaepernick and Harbaugh both have the utmost respect for Smith and how he handled the trade. Here’s what Harbaugh had to say about Smith via 49ers.com:
"“Very happy for his success. Not rooting for success for him this week, but always very happy for his success, almost all the time, for Alex Smith’s success. This week not included.”"
And here’s what Kaepernick had to say via 49ers.com:
"“But Alex has done a lot of great things in this league. He’s done a lot of great things to help me. Nothing but the utmost respect for him.…“The way he handled things (in 2012) didn’t turn it into a controversy in the locker room, and that just shows the character that he has not just as a player, but as a man…”"
The Kaepernick-Smith showdown is the major headline of this game, but the 49ers hope to move past that debate and build on their 26-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week.
With that win, the 49ers improved their record to 2-2, which puts them in third place in the NFC West behind the 3-0 Arizona Cardinals and the 2-1 Seattle Seahawks.
The Chiefs also have a 2-2 record, which puts them in third place in the AFC West behind the 3-1 San Diego Chargers and the 2-1 Denver Broncos. The Chiefs are coming off of a huge 41-14 win over the New England Patriots though, so the 49ers will have to find a way to slow down their momentum.
The 49ers have a 6-5 record against the Chiefs in their regular season matchups. In their last matchup, the Chiefs won 31-10 on September 26th, 2010.
