The return of guard Boone has been a big boost for the 49ers’ offensive line, but there is still one glaring hole on the frontline. With Davis missing time, Martin has had to fill the role of starting right tackle. And quite frankly, he has not played well. Martin has been subpar in both run blocking and pass blocking.

Martin is the only 49ers’ offensive lineman to allow multiple sacks, and if not for Kaepernick’s escape ability, Martin’s number could be much worse. The team has also shied away from running to the right side, as the blocking on the edge has been shady.

Martin will have to face some stiff competition from the Eagles. Cedric Thornton will most likely be lined up across from Martin most of the day, but it would not be surprising to see Philly move their front line around to get favorable matchups.

Fletcher Cox will also see some time against Martin, but the biggest matchup will be with Trent Cole. Cole is the Eagles’ best pass-rusher, as evidenced by his 80 career sacks.

Martin will need to play at a much higher level than he’s shown over the first three weeks in order to keep Kaepernick upright and justify running the ball. Otherwise, it will be another long day for the 49ers’ offense.
