Wuertz was acquired from the Cubs in February for infielder Justin Sellers and minor-leaguer Richie Robnett and put together an outstanding season in middle relief for the A’s in 2009 with a sub-1.00 WHIP and a ton of strikeouts while setting up for closer Andrew Bailey.
He was fourth in the American League with 74 appearances.
Wuertz converted four of the six save opportunities he did get and had 29 holds, while allowing only eight of 40 inherited runners to score. His ALI was 1.245.
He was second among AL relievers with 11.67 strikeouts per nine innings, third with a .188 opponents batting average, sixth with a 0.953 WHIP and 49 opponents OPS-plus and seventh with 78.2 innings.
