Baalke is just knocking it out of the park so far. With NaVorro Bowman out for about half the season, the 49ers had some question marks at the middle of their defense. Just like at the center position, the 49ers already had someone on their roster that was primed to take over the starting spot. Michael Wilhoite filled in for Patrick Willis for a couple games last season, and showed he can step up and not leave a huge hole in the defense. Now Chris Borland is here to challenge Wilhoite for that spot next to Willis. While Borland might not be the most athletic linebacker, he is extremely instinctual and has a nose for the ball. With the group of linebackers already on the team, Borland has the best mentors and teachers in the world.
