Phillips rebounded from an injury-shortened 1985 campaign with a solid season in a variety of roles, mostly at second base, before he was slowed by injuries in the second half, missing most of August and almost all of September.
He was ninth in the American League with a 1.8 Defensive WAR and led the league in Total Zone Runs at second base with 14.
Phillips was the A’s leadoff hitter in every game he started and led the club with a .367 on-base percentage.
