McGwire returned from two injury-plagued seasons to earn his seventh All-Star berth and got some MVP votes despite playing for an A’s team that was an also-ran in the AL West.
He was eighth in the American League with a 5.6 Offensive WAR and 10th among position players with a 5.5 WAR.
McGwire was second in the AL with a .685 slugging percentage, fourth with a 1.125 OPS and seventh with a .441 on-base percentage (after all were adjusted for the 24 plate appearances he was short of qualifying).
He was also fourth with 39 home runs and 11 hit by pitches and eighth with 88 walks. Defensively, his 12 errors were the most among first basemen in the AL.
McGwire finished strong, hitting .288/.400/.822 in 25 September games, with 12 homers and 25 RBI.
