Brantley earned his only career All-Star berth in 1990, taking over the closer role from former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian in midseason and running with it.

Brantley converted 19 of 24 save opportunities to go with eight holds, while allowing just nine of 41 inherited runners to score. His average leverage index was 1.904.

Despite the late start, Brantley was eighth in the league with 19 saves.

Among relievers with 50 or more appearances, Brantley led the NL with a 1.56 ERA and a 235 ERA-plus and was sixth with a 77 OPS-plus. Also not known as a power pitcher, Brantley was 21st with 6.33 strikeouts per nine innings.
