The defense was weak spot for the Raiders last season. They struggled to stop opposing offenses and finished with the fifth worst points per game average. The unit was a major point of emphasis this offseason, as they will see as many as eight new starters for the unit. The large amount of turnover for the unit has created this sense of mystery, as people are just not sure what to expect from the defense.
The early reports have been positive, as the defense has looked solid over the first week of camp. The secondary in particular has looked exceptionally strong. The standout player has been safety Tyvon Branch. Branch has shown impressive pass coverage skills, as he is making plays all over the field. He seems to be benefiting from the presence of Charles Woodson, who is a great compliment to Branch’s skill set. Also, Woodson has looked effective and does not show any signs of a major step back in performance.
The corner backs have been solid in practice, as well. Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter are the starters at the moment and they have been solid in each practice. Rookie D.J. Hayden has looked impressive and is showcasing his raw talent, but also makes rookie mistakes. The surprise player of camp has been second year player Cory Nelms. Nelms was a practice squad player last season, until late in the year, when he suited up due to a number of injuries in the defensive backfield.
The defense is going to be a major to key to the Raiders’ success this season. Especially early in the year, as the Raiders try to establish a starter at the quarterback position. If they are able to improve on their performance last year could make Oakland one of the true surprises in the league.
