# 3 – Starting Pitcher – Christy Mathewson

Career: 378-188 / 2.13 ERA / 2507 K’s / 4788.2 IP

Accolades:

1936 Hall of Fame inductee.
1905 World Series Champion.
5-Time National League ERA Leader

Considering he was pitching in an era that featured some of baseball’s most dominating pitchers in Cy Young, Walter Johnson, and Chief Bender, Christy Mathewson is undoubtedly the franchise‘s most successful starting pitcher.

Tied with Pete Alexander, Mathewson owns the record for the 3rd most all-time wins by a starting pitcher (373). Mathewson was a G-d send for the Giants, and was one of thirteen men (alongside his teammate and manager John McGraw) to be selected into the very first Hall of Fame induction ceremony – which did not take place until 1939, the centennial of Abner Doubleday’s supposed invention of the great game.
