5-Major injuries to start the season

Freddie Freeman, Aramis Ramirez, Scott Kazmir, Brian Roberts, John Lackey, and Ryan Ludwick all went down to injury before the first ten games were played.

They join major stars like Derek Jeter, Johan Santana, Hanley Ramirez and others already yet to step between the lines on the diamond in 2013. Some people will undoubtedly blame the World Baseball Classic for the current rash of ailments, but with the exception of Han-Ram, no player can link a direct line to the WBC.

The truth is that in any sport, players will be felled by aches, pains, tears, and strains because no player is made of steel. This is the reason teams build depth, and it might open the door for some unemployed veteran to snag a job or a top prospect to try and make a statement.

On Saturday, because of the injury to Scott Kazmir, the Indians got their first look at top prospect Trevor Bauer.

With their players already dropping like flies, is it possible that the Yanks might reach out to a guy like Jim Thome?
