Oakland Raiders: 3 trades that could land the team Stefon Diggs
Trade Scenario 2: OAK receives: Stefon Diggs (WR); MIN receives: Austin Hooper (TE) & 2020 1st Round Pick (OAK); ATL receives: 2020 3rd Round Pick (CHI via OAK) & 2020 5th Round Pick (MIN)
With Barnwell’s suggestion in mind, we’ve put together our own three-team, mid-season trade hypothetical that entices the Vikings a little bit more.
The Oakland Raiders would only be receiving Stefon Diggs back — without any additional draft compensation.
Instead of the Dolphins, the Raiders would have to include the Atlanta Falcons, who have been a massive disappointment this year. While it isn’t as surefire that the Falcons will be major sellers, they’re probably not against picking up the phone.
Tight end Austin Hooper is a considerably better player than Parker and would be an immediate upgrade at tight end for the Vikings. He’s already been linked to several teams, despite mixed reports about what Atlanta wants to do with him.
Still, he’s on an expiring deal that has him making only about $2 million this season. He’d work for Minnesota’s tight quarters when it comes to cap space, and he’d also potentially be a long-term fit if they opted to go that route.
Hooper has been the definition of dependable at the tight end position. He’s racked up nearly 500 yards and three touchdowns so far this season and has matched his career average, catching 80% of the catches headed his way.
He also serves as a physical addition that could add significant pass-blocking — a plus when there are still questions surrounding the Minnesota quarterback situation.
If he stays in Atlanta, he’s probably the kind of player that could receive a franchise tag. But with so many young options, the Falcons may not burn one on him.
With the Falcons scuttling and things not looking like they’re going to turn around, it might be wise for them to get something out of a player that could cost them big money this offseason.
In this hypothetical, the Raiders would be sending the third-round draft pick from the Bears to the Falcons. This, paired with a fifth-rounder from the Vikings should be enticing enough to possibly land Hooper.
The Vikings would be much more attracted to an offer like this, as it would give them an immediate option for this season, a draft asset for the future, and a possible option to bring back another capable, young player.
The Raiders would essentially be getting Diggs for a first-rounder and third-rounder, but they’d still likely be able to hold onto whatever first-round pick ended up being better.
It wouldn’t be as pretty for the Raiders as the previous trade, but it takes into account what each of the three teams might be looking for.
The Raiders would get their number one option, moving Tyrell Williams to a more comfortable No. 2 role. The Vikings would get some more stability for now and the future. And the Falcons would get two mid-round draft picks for a player they might lose for nothing.
It’d take some quick decision-making and a very specific turn of events for both the Vikings and Falcons in order for things to go down this way, but it’s not out of the realm of possibilities.
With the Falcons in free-fall, it might be about time they start listening to trade offers.
