PITTSBURGH, PA – DECEMBER 04: Odell Beckham /

Assessing Odell Beckham Jr.’s price tag

The obvious starting point in pinpointing Odell Beckham Jr.’s value has to begin with what he was dealt for back in March when the New York Giants decided to part ways with their dramatic and sensational receiver.

The Browns sent over safety Jabrill Peppers, guard Kevin Zeitler, the 17th overall pick, and the 95th overall pick to land Beckham along with linebacker Olivier Vernon.

Peppers has asserted himself as being a player that gets after it on the field, quietly coming into his own as he finds his groove in New York. A first and second-round pick isn’t bad either.

In Beckham’s eyes, value was left on the table in order to ship him out to a team that had been the butt of various jokes over the better part of the last two decades.

Regardless of Beckham’s assessment, it isn’t like the Browns got away with highway robbery or anything. Peppers was a first-round selection in 2017. He was traded alongside two more picks in 2019.

This goes for every potential trade that the Raiders would have to be willing to make in order to land a big name like Odell Beckham Jr. They’ll need to give up draft capital in order to make it happen.

The good news for the Oakland Raiders is that, in this hypothetical scenario where the Cleveland Browns would want to part ways with Beckham after just five or so weeks of the season, the price would have to slightly drop.

The Browns would not be able to recoup everything they lost in their trade the New York Giants.

  • This would be about reshuffling the deck and trying to put it all together behind Baker Mayfield while cutting ties with a potential impending headache if things don’t pick up soon. It would potentially be selling low.

But it would also be a situation where the Cleveland Browns could get something valuable back for a player still perceived as being one of the most gifted young athletes in the game.

Beckham has reason for concern in regard to his performance this season. Despite inking an impressive five-year, $90 million contract last year with the New York Giants, 2019 is his last year of guaranteed money. There’s virtually no security for him moving forward.

Obviously, the Browns’ actual interest in entertaining a trade like this has to be more limited than speculative articles and insider reports are going to suggest.

But, at some point, the frustration may keep mounting. The Browns could keep feeling the pressure of needing to make a move before Beckham picks up where he left off on his tirades in New York and make for an especially depressing Browns season.

Could the Raiders be looking to handle a potential Beckham pursuit in a similar manner as they did with Antonio Brown? Possibly. It would seem to fit — in a much less head-casey way.

But for it to happen, it’d require the Raiders to pick up the phone and start inquiring about Beckham — just like they did when he was a member of the Giants.

Here are three trade scenarios where the Oakland Raiders may be able to lure Odell Beckham Jr. from the Browns and make a serious run for a playoff berth this season.
