San Jose Earthquakes Fall To L.A. Galaxy In Inaugural Central California Cup

The San Jose Earthquakes made a late push for a game-tying goal, but lost a 2-1 preseason match to the L.A. Galaxy in the inaugural Central California Cup at Chukchansi Park in Fresno.

The Quakes fell to 0-3 in the preseason with the loss.

The Galaxy scored first when Marcelo Sarvas curled a shot inside the far post in the 31st minute and they took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Gyasi Zardes in the 54th minute.

San Jose subbed out the entire starting unit in the 63rd minute and was rewarded with a goal by Earthquakes Academy defender Josh Morton in the 68th minute. Morton converted a corner from Sam Garza for the goal.

The Quakes made a late push but couldn’t find the net.

San Jose is off until Sunday, Feb. 23, when they go to Portland, Ore., for their final three preseason matches in the Rose City International. The Quakes play the host Portland Timbers at 5 p.m. Pacific, then face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. before closing out the event on Saturday, March 1, at 2:30 p.m. against Portmore United FC from Jamaica.

The Quakes will host Deportivo Toluca FC in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal on March 11 before opening their MLS regular-season slate on March 15 at Buck Shaw Stadium against Real Salt Lake.
