Ben Heeney, the Oakland Raiders second year linebacker, was involved in a serious car accident on Easter Sunday, but thankfully walked away from it unharmed.

More from Las Vegas Raiders News

Ben Heeney, the Oakland Raiders‘ second year linebacker, was undoubtedly breathing a huge sigh of relief on Easter Sunday. Heeney, back in his home state of Kansas during the offseason, was involved in a head on collision while on his way to church on Sunday morning.

Heeney and his family walked away from the accident unharmed, thankfully. But in the wake of the tragic motorcycle death of Baltimore Ravens’ cornerback Tray Walker — also 23 years old — it’s another sobering reminder just how fleeting life can be.

While driving to church to celebrate Easter Sunday, Heeney reported that he lost control of his car after hitting a patch of sluch and ice that sent him into a full 180 degree spin. His vehicle wound up facing oncoming traffic – and was then hit head on by a car reportedly traveling 60 miles per hour.

It is a situation that fortunately, everybody walked away from, but is one that could have very easily had a really terrible ending.

Heeny, Oakland’s fifth round pick out of Kansas last season, credited God with helping to protect he and his loved ones from a scary, head-on collision. It seems that maybe somebody was looking out for him since it was an accident that could have easily turned very tragic.

After the accident, the 23 year old second year pro posted photos of the aftermath to his Instagram page.

He added the following caption to the photo:

"Crazy day today. Got up to go to church on this snowy Kansas morning. We were 1/2 mile away from church when we hit a slush patch, lost control, and spun out 180 degrees into the middle of the highway. We were sitting in the middle of the highway staring oncoming traffic in the face and a few seconds later we were hit head on by a car going 60 mph. By the grace of God, there were no injuries and everyone came out safe and ok. I have no doubt in my mind that God was watching over my family this morning on the day of His Son’s resurrection. #HappyEaster"

In 2015, Heeney appeared in 15 games for the Raiders, collecting 38 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and helping infuse Oakland’s defense with some energy. With veteran free agent Curtis Lofton flaming out and vastly underperforming, Heeney stepped in and did a good job of helping strengthen the middle of Oakland’s defense and became a favorite among fans.

He became a valuable member of Oakland’s defensive rotation and will likely see his role expanded this season. And thankfully, with he and his family safe and not suffering any injuries after that terrifying accident, he’s going to have the opportunity to do just that.

Whatever you believe, whether you’d credit a higher power or not, that’s a pretty serious and scary situation right there. And one he and his family are incredibly lucky to be walking away from. Heeney is undoubtedly breathing a huge sigh of relief and there is no question that Raider Nation is breathing a sigh of relief right along with him.
