The San Francisco 49ers made their first set of cuts to get down to the 75-man player limit Monday night.
There aren’t really any surprises in the list below, but keep in mind there is also the physically unable to perform list (PUP) and the non-football injury list (NFI) which help reach that 75-man limit a bit easier.
On the quarterback front Bethel-Thompson really didn’t get a chance to show what he could do, but being buried on the depth chart as the fourth QB didn’t really help.
One small surprise is the fact that running back Jewel Hampton didn’t make the first cuts, although his lackluster performance this preseason combined with Glenn Winston’s breakout in game three helped that decision. Hampton has been apart of the San Francisco 49ers organization over the last couple of years, mostly on the practice squad.
More on the running back front, Marcus Lattimore is still on the NFI list, meaning he (along with NaVorro Bowman) is out for at least the first six games of the season. Not really surprising considering he hasn’t played at all so far this season, but it does mean the #2 RB spot is Carlos Hyde’s to lose.
So far the second-round draft pick has shown flashes of great play and it seems like the coaching staff trusts him to protect Colin Kaepernick. Don’t be surprised if he sees a decent amount of carries this season.
Now the San Francisco 49ers have until Saturday to whittle the roster down to the final 53. No doubt their final game on Thursday against the Houston Texans will go a long way to deciding which guys on the bubble make the cut.
