The San Francisco 49ers will face the San Diego Chargers today in their third preseason game of the season. This will be the 49ers’ second game in Levi’s Stadium, and this game will be nationally televised.
Both the 49ers and the Chargers hope to bounce back after awful games last week. The Chargers fell to 1-1 in the preseason after losing to the Seattle Seahawks 41-14 last week. In that game, Philip Rivers threw just four passes for 20 yards, but the 49ers will certainly see more action from Rivers today, given the fact that it’s week three of the preseason.
The 49ers have looked pretty miserable in their first two preseason games, and there haven’t been many positives to come out of their preseason games so far. In the first week of the preseason, the 49ers faced the Baltimore Ravens and lost 23-3. Last week, the 49ers faced the Denver Broncos and lost 34-0. The 49ers have not yet scored a touchdown in preseason.
Week 3 of preseason is normally when NFL teams will begin to play their starters more. This will probably be the case for the 49ers, but since they play their final preseason game against the Houston Texans just four days later (on the 28th), it’s unclear how much Jim Harbaugh will decide to play his starters and specifically, Colin Kaepernick.
The 49ers’ goals for this preseason game will be to keep their key players healthy and for Harbaugh and the rest of the coaching staff to start to make their final roster decisions heading into the last preseason game.
