According to his own Instagram the San Francisco 49ers have signed running back Alfonso Smith. Smith, a former member of the Cardinals, was originally signed by Arizona after going undrafted in 2010.
While he does not boast the most impressive of resumes, he is sure to at least be a bit of help in camp after the injuries to Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James, as well as the fact that Marcus Lattimore is still on the non-football injury (NFI) list. Here’s a better look at how these injuries will effect the team moving forward. James at least is expected to be back by the season opener, though Hunter might be out for the season.
Last season with the Cardinals Alfonso Smith appeared in all 16 games and saw plenty of snaps as a special-teamer. Offensively he was used pretty sparingly and rushed just 18 times for 54 yards and a touchdown. He also had 10 catches for 68 yards.
It’s hard to say right now if Alfonso Smith will have a legitimate shot to make the team or if he will simply be more of a camp body, but right now he adds depth to an already ailing running back corps. If anything, the added competition could be healthy for rookie Carlos Hyde as well as Jewel Hampton and others.
