Oakland Raiders Season Week #1: at New York Jets

The 2014 regular seasons starts out on the road for the Oakland Raiders.  What can be expected in their rematch with the New York Jets?

Subplot:  Revenge

It seems fitting that the Raiders would get their 2014 campaign started off against an opponent they met last season, especially one that beat them.  The New York Jets put on a show against Oakland last December when they scored 37 points, with a rookie quarterback no less.  The Silver and Black will have a chance for revenge, in much more favorable weather too.

Victory Conditions:

Matt Schaub must test that Jets secondary early

One thing about the Jets is they played great run defense in 2013 but their secondary was vulnerable quite often due to injuries and inconsistency, particularly at cornerback.  With Antonio Cromartie now gone the team is leaning heavily on two unproven commodities in Dee Milliner and Dimitri Patterson.  They also have a rookie safety starting in Calvin Pryor.  This will make an excellent opportunity for new Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub to hit the ground running, or throwing in this case.

Stop Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory

Conversely, as strange as it sounds, the best way for the Oakland Raiders defense to win this game is not by unleashing their rebuilt pass rush with Khalil Mack and company.  It will be their run defense.  New York gained much of their success on the ground in the meeting last season, rushing for over 140 yards and two touchdowns.  Everyone recalls the pinball run Chris Ivory had in the 4th quarter.  Stopping him and free agent addition Chris Johnson are top priority.

Prediction:  Raiders win 21-17
