With spring training under way, Golden Gate Sports is spending the next few weeks looking at some of the best single-season performances in the history of the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants, by position.

Today, we look at the 10 best seasons by catchers in the history of the Giants, dating back to their arrival in San Francisco in 1958.

This is the third in the series on the Giants, as we’ve already listed the top 10 seasons in left field and by relievers. The series will alternate teams each day, concluding with the best players by position in the history of each franchise.

To qualify for this list, given the demands of the position, a player needed to appear in at least half of the team’s games at catcher for the season in question (77 games from 1958-60, 81 games since 1961). This requirement was not prorated for the strike-shortened seasons of 1981 or 1994.

Before you turn the page, here are the five seasons that just missed the cut:

15. Milt May, 1982
14. Tom Haller, 1963
13. Tom Haller, 1964
12. Kirt Manwaring, 1992
11. Bob Brenly, 1987
