The bats of the Oakland A’s stayed hot this afternoon in Cleveland allowing the A’s to complete the three-game sweep with a 13-3 victory. They are now 28-16 and lead the AL West by four games.
This afternoon’s pitching matchup was between Jesse Chavez and and Justin Masterson. It was a great outing for Chavez who earned his fourth win of the season in five innings of work. He allowed only two runs, both on solo home runs, although he did have to work hard in a few innings and because of that he threw 109 pitches.
He worked out of all the jams though and in the end was rewarded for it. It wasn’t a quality start, but it was a gutsy one, and considering the A’s have one of the best bullpens in baseball, he was in good hands after the fifth inning.
On the other side of things Masterson was knocked around a bit by the Oakland A’s giving up seven runs in 4.1 innings. He was finally pulled in favor of Josh Outman, but not before the A’s put up four runs in the inning on Masterson. It started with a Josh Donaldson RBI single and was capped off by a Yoenis Cespedes double that knocked in two more. Brandon Moss also had an RBI double.
That inning was the second of five-straight innings where the Oakland A’s earned runs en route to their 13-run game. Those five-straight innings came from the fourth to the eighth, where Oakland scored 12 of their 13 runs.
The A’s other big inning came in the eighth where Cespedes doubled in two more runs while John Jaso plated another in a fielder’s choice.
By the end of things Cespedes led Oakland with five RBI’s on the day followed by Moss who had three. Moss also crossed home plate four times along with Donaldson. Josh Reddick and John Jaso had two RBI’s each.
The Oakland A’s will continue their road trip and now head off to Tampa Bay to face the Rays in a three-game set that starts on Tuesday.
