The University of San Francisco Dons baseball team was shut out by the UCSB Gauchos 6-0 at Benedetti Diamond today.
The Dons lost the first game of the series yesterday 10-4, and will attempt to close out the homestand with a victory against the Gauchos tomorrow on Senior Day where a few will be honored tomorrow. This drops their season record to 24-28 including 11-16 in the West Coast Conference.
USF Dons starter Christian Cecilio pitched well enough, scattering six runs (five earned) over 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits while striking out eight. But it wasn’t enough to overcome Austin Pettitone’s five-hit, complete game shut out. Pettibone struck out 10 batters, but induced the Dons into multiple ground outs, including two double plays after he allowed the leadoff batter to reach base.
The Dons supplied little offense to support Cecilio, but Bradley Zimmer was able to extend his consecutive hitting streak to seven games.
Meanwhile, the Gauchos played small ball to manufacture runs using sacrifice bunts, including a squeeze to plate a runner, and opportunistic steals to accompany timely hitting.
