San Francisco 49ers First Round Pick: S Jimmie Ward

The San Francisco 49ers have selected S Jimmie Ward from Northern Illinois with the #30 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

After much speculation that they would trade up, the San Francisco 49ers  ended up staying put instead and take Jimmie Ward with the #30 overall pick.

He was definitely not on the radar for most, and plenty of people were expecting a either a true corner or wide receiver, especially with Courtney Roby and and Marqise Lee on the board. Instead the San Francisco 49ers elect to draft a safety in the first round for the second-straight year.

Before everyone goes nuts and dismisses this pick after the signing of Antoine Bethea in the offseason, just know that Jimmie Ward has the potential to be a nickel corner. He also fits the team as a guy willing to hit, although his size gives some concern about his longevity at the next level in the NFL.

Here’s what CBS Sports has as far as his strengths:

Compact frame. Remarkably fluid athlete with quick feet, smooth change-of-direction agility and easy acceleration. Dropped down to cover slot receivers with solid man-to-man skills to handle a similar role in the NFL

He could be another playmaker to be added to this very talented roster. Stay tuned for reactions about this pick as well as breakdowns coming shortly!
