The San Jose Earthquakes staved off a late rally while the Colorado Rapids had a man advantage for the final four minutes plus stoppage time in the second half to earn a point with a scoreless draw Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
San Jose (0-2-3) remained winless on the season, while Colorado (3-1-2) is unbeaten in three straight.
The Rapids had possession for more than 60 percent of the game, but neither side was able to mount much of an offensive attack on a rainy afternoon.
The Earthquakes’ best chance came in the opening minute, when Alan Gordon got a header off a corner kick and banged it off the crossbar. Jon Busch made a great save for San Jose on a change by Deshorn Brown in the 25th minute, with Busch laying out to make the stop.
Colorado went a man up in the 86th minute when Earthquakes forward Adam Jahn picked up a red card for laying out Colorado rookie Jared Watts with a shoulder. Jahn had come on as a substitute for Gordon just two minutes earlier.
The Rapids coaching staff chirped at Earthquakes coach Mark Watson after the play, but the Rapids couldn’t get a goal while playing 11-on-10.
None of San Jose’s six shots were on target and just one of Colorado’s nine attempts was on the mark.
The Quakes return home next Saturday to host Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
