The Oakland Athletics on Wednesday claimed right-handed pitcher Marcus Walden off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and optioned him to Triple-A Sacramento.
According to MLB.com, Walden was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Tuesday for the purposes of moving him off the 40-man roster.
Walden, 25, had made three relief appearances this season for Triple-A Buffalo, allowing six runs and striking out one in four innings. He worked as a starter at Double-A New Hampshire last season, posting a 3.71 ERA and 1.441 WHIP in 162.1 innings over 26 starts, with 88 strikeouts.
A native of Fresno, Walden was drafted by the Blue Jays in the ninth round out of Fresno City College in 2007. He missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 after Tommy John surgery.
He has not pitched in the major leagues to this point and has made 114 appearances and 90 starts in seven minor league campaigns.
