With rosters due to be locked in by noon Sunday, Saturday’s rainout of the finale of the Bay Bridge Series gave the San Francisco Giants a chance to get their work done early.
The Giants set their final 25-man roster for Opening Day Monday at Arizona, with veteran reliever J.C. Gutierrez earning a spot in the San Francisco bullpen (h/t MLB.com).
Gutierrez pitched with the Royals and Angels last season, posting a 4.23 ERA and 1.373 WHIP in 53 total appearances covering 55.1 innings. He had 45 strikeouts. Gutierrez, 30, had a 3.38 ERA and 1.295 WHIP in 29.1 innings and 25 games with Kansas City, but struggled with the Angels, recording a 5.19 ERA and 1.462 WHIP in 28 games and 26 innings.
Prospect Derek Law, 23, will be sent to Double-A Richmond to start the year after a solid spring.
Also making the final roster is journeyman infielder Brandon Hicks, whose contract was purchased along with Gutierrez’s so they could be added to the 40-man roster. Outfielder Roger Kieschnick was designated for assignment to open the necessary roster spots for Hicks and Gutierrez.
Left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 23, because of a sprained right knee and second baseman Marco Scutaro’s DL assignment was made retroactive to March 21 due to what is being called a lower back strain.
The final roster breakdown for the Giants includes (* indicates left-handed pitcher or hitter, % indicates switch-hitter):
Starting pitchers: Madison Bumgarner*, Matt Cain, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong.
Disabled List (15-day): LHP Jeremy Affeldt, 2B Marco Scutaro.
