Report: Maurice Jones-Drew, De La Salle Graduate, Visiting Oakland Raiders

According to a report, former All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew, an Oakland native who graduated from De La Salle High School in Concord, is visiting the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported via Twitter:

Jones-Drew bounced back from a Lisfranc injury that cost him all but six games in 2012 to rush for 803 yard and five touchdowns for the Jaguars in 2013, while catching 43 passes for another 314 yards.

Jones-Drew was an All-Pro selection in 2011 with Jacksonville after leading the NFL in rushing with 1,606 yards. He also scored eight touchdowns and caught 43 passes for 374 yards and three more scores.

He’s a three-time Pro Bowler, once after each of his 1,000-yard seasons in 2009-11. In 2009, Jones-Drew ran for 15 touchdowns and scored another through the air in his first season as the feature back in Jacksonville. He rushed for more than 2,500 yards in his first three years while splitting time in the backfield with Fred Taylor.

He is fifth among active running backs with 8,071 yards rushing and second on the active list with 68 rushing touchdowns.

Given that the Raiders have re-signed Darren McFadden, who has never played more than 13 games in a season and has missed 29 games to injury in six years, the durable Jones-Drew could be a solid partner in the backfield. Jones-Drew has missed 14 games in eight seasons, 10 of them in one year.

The 28-year-old Jones-Drew was a consensus All-America selection as a junior at UCLA in 2005 after accounting for 1,367 yards from scrimmage and 17 touchdowns for the Bruins. In three seasons at UCLA, Jones-Drew rushed for 2,503 yards and 26 touchdowns and caught 64 passes for 819 yards and seven scores.

He was a second-round pick of the Jaguars in 2005.

Would be a good signing for a couple years. I watched UCLA games on TV and was always impressed with him. The Raiders Frank Gore?

Just when we though free agency was cooling off. BOOM!!! Here comes MJD knocking at the door. Sign him up Reg. Give him a 2 year contract, the 2nd year contingent on how he performs during the first year. Let do this thing. I sure hope all raiders fans are as excited as I am. Man I can’t wait till football starts. I get psyched just thinking about it.

I think John Madden needs to give MJD a call. he could say, “son, we need you to mow down some defenders at O.Com.”

  • KloverJane

He’d be a fool not to.

This would be the strongest backfield since Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen. If they can stay healthy that is…
