Report: Richie Incognito Must Be Evaluated Before He’s Cleared To Return To NFL

According to a report, the NFL will require free agent offensive lineman Richie Incognito to undergo an evaluation by medical advisors designated by the league and the NFL Players Association before he can be paid or play.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported via Twitter that while Incognito can sign a contract, actually getting back on the field will be a more complicated process:

Commissioner Roger Goodell will review the report and recommendation of the medical team and issue a final determination on Incognito’s eligibility.

The focal point of a bullying scandal in Miami last season, Incognito told NFL Media’s Michael Silver that the Oakland Raiders are one of the teams he would be interested in playing for in 2014, because of his ties to offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Tony Sparano.

Silver’s report said Incognito has been to three treatment facilities for substance abuse and mental health issues over the past several weeks.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported last month that the NFL may have problems disciplining Incognito in the wake of the report by attorney Ted Wells that investigated the incidents in Miami last season.

The collective bargaining agreement says a player can only be penalized once for the same act or conduct. The Dolphins suspended incognito for eight games, two unpaid, last season.

The league’s workaround, should it desire to penalize Incognito further, could be to assign disciplinary action based on homophobic harassment detailed in the Wells report directed at “Player A,” who identified himself as lineman Andrew McDonald, or the assistant trainer who was the subject of racial harassment, according to the report.
