The Stanford Cardinal are back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008 and will open play in the second round on Friday morning (Pacific time) when they take on the New Mexico Lobos at the Scotttrade Center in St. Louis.
The game can be seen on TBS or you can catch the live stream here, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Pacific.
The game tips at 10:40 a.m. Pacific between the No. 10-seeded Cardinal and the seventh-seeded Lobos, tournament champions of the Mountain West Conference.
New Mexico (27-6) went down in the second round last year as a No. 3 seed, losing to Harvard in the round of 64. Harvard pulled off another second-round upset on Thursday, beating fifth-seeded Cincinnati to advance to the third round.
The Lobos say they’ve learned.
“It was a tough loss, but at the end of the day, everyone loses,” New Mexico guard Kendall Williams told the Associated Press. “I had respect for that team (Harvard) going into the game and more respect now. And hopefully Cincinnati has some respect for them because they were a good team, last year and they are an even better team this year.”
This is Stanford’s first NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons under coach Johnny Dawkins, but the Cardinal sort of stumbled in, losing three of their last four regular-season games before winning two games to reach the semifinals of the Pac-12 tournament.
“I am excited to be here, of course. Excited to still be playing,” Dawkins said. “I look at our seniors who’ve had an incredible journey to get here with the expectations that they had.”
Stanford is led by the 1-2 punch of guard Chasson Randle, who leads the team in scoring at 18.7 points per game, and forward Dwight Powell, who is second in both scoring (14.2 points per game) and rebounding (6.9 per game).
The winner of the Stanford-New Mexico matchup will go on to face the winner between 15th-seeded Eastern Kentucky and the South Region’s No. 2 seed, Kansas, in the third round on Sunday.
