Three Bay Area teams were among the 32 selected Sunday night for the National Invitation Tournament, including the Cal Golden Bears, USF Dons and Saint Mary’s Gaels.
The schedule has yet to be announced, but the matchups and seedings have been set for the event, which opens with first round play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Golden Bears (19-13) are a No. 2 seed and will host No. 7 seed Utah Valley (20-11). The Wolverines were an automatic qualifier for the NIT as the regular-season champion of the Western Athletic Conference. They were upset Friday night by Idaho in the semifinals of the WAC tournament.
Meanwhile, two Bay Area squads from the West Coast Conference earned home games for the first round.
The Dons (21-11) earned a No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seeded LSU (19-13) out of the Southeastern Conference in the first round. USF finished in a second-place tie with BYU in the WCC regular season and lost in overtime to the Cougars in the WCC tourney semifinals on March 10.
Saint Mary’s (22-11) was the fourth-place finisher in the WCC and is also a No. 4 seed for the NIT. The Gaels will open up at home against Utah (21-11) out of the Pac-12. Saint Mary’s lost in the WCC semifinals to Gonzaga on March 10 and are back in the NIT after two straight NCAA tournament appearances.
Regionally, UC Irvine, which won the Big West regular season title before being upset in the semifinals of the conference tournament by Cal Poly, also earned an automatic bid to the NIT. The eighth-seeded Anteaters will play one of the No. 1 seeds, SMU, in the first round.
