The 49ers are interested in bringing Whitner back after he spent the last three seasons in San Francisco. Last season, Whitner earned his second straight Pro Bowl berth, finishing with 73 tackles, 12 passes defensed, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. In three years as the 49ers strong safety, Whitner has five interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, 218 tackles and 27 passes defensed to go with five forced fumbles. The eighth overall pick of the Bills out of Ohio State in 2006, the 28-year-old spent five years in Buffalo before signing with the 49ers after the lockout in 2011. Whitner offered little insight as he responded to the report via Twitter:
Don’t believe the rumors. Or should you? Hmmmm
