Yoenis Cespedes drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning while Jesse Chavez made his second scoreless start of the spring and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in Cactus League action Sunday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
The A’s (3-1) got on the board in the top of the first, pushing across an unearned run. Jed Lowrie walked with one out and with two outs, Cespedes reached on an error by Angels third baseman David Freese. Hector Santiago then issued another walk, this one to Brandon Moss, and Lowrie scored when Michael Taylor’s grounder to short couldn’t yield an out when Moss beat the force play at second.
It stayed 1-0 until the fifth, when Oakland got to Angel reliever Joe Blanton. Lowrie and Josh Donaldson led off the inning with back-to-back singles and both of them scored when Cespedes doubled to left field.
Chavez (2-0) worked 2.2 innings and allowed a walk and a hit while striking out two. Phil Humber walked one and struck out two in a scoreless inning and Joe Savery allowed two hits and a walk while fanning one in 1.1 innings. Dan Otero gave up two hits and struck out two in 1.2 innings, Jeff Urlaub retired the only batter he faced to close out the seventh inning, Buschmann allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in the eighth and Jesus Flores worked a 1-2-3 ninth to get his first save of the spring.
