Jared Brownridge hit 7-of-9 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 38 points as the Santa Clara Broncos took control of the game by closing the first half on a 17-2 run en route to an 86-78 win over the Pepperdine Waves Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.
The Broncos (13-18, 6-12 West Coast Conference) led 30-29 before Brownridge canned three 3s during a 17-2 burst over the final 4:06 of the first half that put Santa Clara up 47-31 at the break.
The Waves (15-15, 8-10) fell behind by as much as 27 points before making a final charge, getting as close as six points at 75-69 with 1:27 remaining.
Santa Clara was 27-for-63 (42.9 percent) overall, 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) from deep and 23-for-31 (74.2 percent) from the foul line. Pepperdine was 25-for-56 (44.6 percent), 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) and 19-for-29 (65.5 percent).
The Broncos had a 38-36 edge on the boards and had 12 turnovers. The Waves turned the ball over 17 times.
Santa Clara will either be the eighth or ninth seed when the WCC tournament opens Thursday in Las Vegas, where they will take on Pacific in one of the opening round games.
