The UC Davis Aggies torched the nets from 3-point land to defeat the Cal Poly Mustangs 85-73 at The Pavilion Thursday night. Avery Johnson scored a career-high 18 points for the Aggies (9-19, 4-9 Big West Conference), while Georgi Funtarov posted his first double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Brynton Lemar and Ryan Sypkens added 14 points apiece, while Corey Hawkins contributed 10 points and seven assists.
Chris Eversley led the Mustangs (10-17, 6-8) with 17 points, with David Nwabe adding 12 points. Reese Morgan and Malik Love chipped in 10 points apiece. Eversley also had a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Jamal Johnson dished out six assists.
The Aggies took a 10-9 lead but went on a 14-4 run and never looked back, taking a 37-25 lead into halftime. Another 14-3 surge stretched the Aggies’ lead to 63-43, icing the game midway into the second half. It was the Aggies’ sharpshooting which downed the Mustangs, as UC Davis made 13-of-24 treys.
The Aggies shot 49.0 percent (25-51) from the field, and 78.6 percent (22-28) from the free throw line. UC Davis was out-rebounded by the Mustangs 34-33.
The Mustangs shot 41.7 percent (25-60) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-17) behind the 3-point line, and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free throw line.
The Aggies host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday at The Pavilion. Tip off is 5 p.m. Pacific.
